Re:the weather - 2007/01/18 04:44 We were without power several times in the past few days, but never for more than a few hours (5-7 at a time). I can honestly say, that for all I might really not like being under AEP's thumb, they did an amazing job getting our electricity back on this weekend. I honestly have no complaints at all. I wish we hadn't lost power at all, but that's nothing that could be helped at all.

Re:the weather - 2007/01/18 21:18 Friday night we sat up on our hill watching transformers blow. We saw 3 or 4 bright green flashes before our power went out. Today is the first I have been online since Friday the 12th. We STILL don't have power at my house. The firewood gave out two days ago, but that same night Michelle's parents got power back so we're living with them right now. Today was the first day I've been at work since the storm. My parents are 1/4 mile from us and they got power yesterday, but they are with AEP. Our power is through REC and they have far fewer resources. They are working in the Grove area mainly. They estimate we will have power by the first of next week.
It's incredible. I have seen no National Guard, no FEMA, and no Red Cross around Chouteau. Locust Grive is even worse. Everyone in our area has been totally on our own. Power lines were down on the ground all over, poles were broken, you had to have a 4x4 and a chainsaw to get anywhere Saturday. We had to go to Claremore to get fuel that day. I can't believe no one is doing anything to help the outlying families as far as supplies. It's really rediculous. Most people our way are pretty self sufficient and we were better prepared than most, but we had to pack it in and vacate finally. I don't understand why the power companies don't bury their residential power lines like the water utilities.
Our baby had been in the hospital for RSV the previous weekend and was just getting over it when the storm hit. So we were holed up with each other in a small room once again. 2007 has been a crap year for us so far.
The rural roads are getting worse, too. Not better.
My family didn't have it as bad as others but it has still been a trying time for us. Just getting a hot shower and having lights at night REALLY helped our spirits. Scented candles and one gas lantern have been it at night.
I'm not shaving until we get power. It's my civil protest against REC. Appropriately, I have changed my avatar to Grizzly Adams. Don't worry, I am bathing now.

Anyone else have any hardships they want to share? I'm really regretting selling our 4x4. It's almost enough to make me want to move to town. Ha! Not!

You and me both Chad. We're with AEP, and for all I usually really complain about them, cause frankly, their customer service sucks. But they really went all out this time. But I still can't wait to get out of town. I HATE LIVING IN TOWN!!!! I hate this neighborhood, it wasn't the greatest to begin with, but in the last 10 years, it's gone so far downhill...ugh. Anyway...being with REC and them having limited resources in this situation IS something to consider.

And I hear ya on the scented candles...our house smelled REALLY odd for a couple of days. hehe

I hope you three get back home soon, because it's really hard to be out of your home like this, even if you are with family. It's just comforting to be HOME.

Re:the weather - 2007/01/20 03:03 my parents still reside in chouteau out by mission bend and mazie landing, they didnot get power back on til around 430pm today. They had been relying on there fireplace and gas oven for heat....as well as a generator for electricity.

Re:the weather - 2007/01/21 23:13 I have a new found appreciation for teachers. a whole week without school and no outside play has pushed me over the edge. They have some built up energy, hope those teachers take their meds.

Re:the weather - 2007/01/22 14:52 There's been a lot of that. Imagine how bad it is for teachers when they have 20+ kids all worked up! Now that recess has been outlawed or severely shortened in many schools, kids just can't keep still.
We got power back at 3:00pm Saturday. We went 8 grueling days without. Some folks outside town still don't have any. Most of the people at our church had power again when we saw them yesterday. My cousins living at Flat Rock lost power over the weekend. Hopefully they get it back soon. I know they were just getting things back to normal, too.
