Re:Any Word - 2008/03/30 08:46 I had Mrs. Croft in Second grade and I loved her class. But I remember Mrs. Ashley seemed so nice and all the kids in her class were like her own children. She seemed like one of those teachers that was custom built for Elementary, she was so nice. If some little punk gave her trouble on the playground you felt bad, like they were acting up with your own mother.

I guess something this tragedy reminds us is that sadly, not everyone can have as effective a driver's ed teacher as Mr. Ashley. I can tell you if every school did, the roads would be a whole lot safer.
For the seemingly small portion of drivers on the road today that he instructed, those of us who learned from him are a cut above (in my opinion anyway). And I feel like I can say that because I spend more time on the road than I like to think about. And every day it seems I am dismayed by the careless driving habits of 'the other guy'.
I guarantee this though: People are alive today that would otherwise not be if he weren't such an effective... and uh..... intimidating driving instructor. No doubt in my mind.

Here's a Mr. Ashley story. I bet a lot of us have one similiar:
When I was 16 and new to the road (and fresh out of his driver's ed class, no less) I passed a school bus that was stopped with it's lights on, loading some kids. I don't know what I was thinking. I knew I messed up even as I passed. I looked at the driver when I went by..... yeah, it was Mr. Ashley. D'OH!
When he saw me later that day, he didn't get in my face. He just told me calmly that if I ever did that again, it would cost me some money.
I'm 31 years old and to this day if I see a school bus stopped (I don't care if it's in a wide open parking lot) you couldn't MAKE me drive around it. I remember that encounter every single time I see those flashing lights!

I don't remember any stories about Ms Hanna. Aside from the fact that she was a very upbeat person and seemed to love her job. I DO remember being uber grateful when she let me set up her brand new, smoking fast, i386 33mhz PC w/ an 80mb hard drive and 4mb of RAM when it was bought for the Library. That thing was the bomb diggity!

Re:Any Word - 2008/03/30 09:14 I just typed a novel explaining some things but for some reason it didn't form a new topic so here is the trimmed down version.

First off, thank you for all your prayers and thoughts.

KEY FUNERAL HOME 6-8pm on Monday - "Meet and Greet" I guess that is what it will be called, it will not be open casket.

EDON MENNONITE CHURCH 3:00 on Tuesday - Memorial Service

BOTH WILL BE JOINT SERVICES

Ms. Hanna had become part of our family in the past 7-10 years celebrating birthdays and holidays with us and becoming very close friends with my mom...they would want joint services or no service at all.

PLEASE no flowers or food. Both families have a massive amount of food already thanks to numerous people. We have set up a memorial fund at the Bank Of Commerce under my mom and Ms. Hannas names. ALL DONATIONS made to BOC will then be presented to a "Reading Literacy" foundations, I can't recall the exact name. Reading was both their passion so we thought this would be more useful.

Dad is doing fine...contrary to some news reports he was never in critical conditon. If any of you decide to attend 1 or both services please don't hesitate to speak to my dad...he would love nothing more than to speak to his past students.

Thank you again,
JimBob

Re:Any Word - 2008/03/30 18:09 Dear Jim Bob im so sorry and my sympothy is with your family. Your mother was my inspiration thru school, she always made me feel like I was one of her children. I was always the quiet skinny girl with glasses, but for some reason she always came to me and asked me to do things for her in the classroom.

I had not seen your mom since I graduated in 1991, so when I heard she was retiring. I made a special trip to Chouteau and walked into her classroom and the look on her face was priceless. We cried, we laughed and talked about old times. She told me what a beautiful woman I turned into be.

I will truly miss her but will always remember her smile, glasses and her jet black hair, that turned a beautiful gray.

Please tell your father and sister that our family is thinking of you all.

Sincerely,

Eleanor Duncan, Steven Duncan, Alina, Stacy, Jimmy Senay.

Re:Any Word - 2008/03/31 02:53 Jim Bob, words just can't express...having lost Grandpa this year I know exactly where you are right now. And I'm so sorry. You and your Dad and Jennifer are in my thoughts and prayers. Your mom taught my two oldest kids...and Ms Hanna was a really special lady to me and all my kids. They were two truly special ladies. I'm really happy to know your dad is doing alright. He was my favorite teacher in high school. You will all be in my prayers for quite some time.

Re:Any Word - 2008/04/01 05:24 I did not have Mrs Ashley as a teacher but I was still influenced by her daily. She was the teacher that all the kids seemed to respect. She is missed greatly. Everyone is in my prayers.
