Never too old to play? - 2007/08/23 05:21 It's been a rough couple weeks for a lot of folks around Chouteau.
Here's some lighter commentary to toss around. I just had to post a link to this article on ESPN.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2986313

A 59 year old man makes a Division III college football roster.

Unbelievable! That's it, I'm going try to out for a college tennis team!

I actually tried to walk on to the NSU Men's team in like '97 or '98. The coach had me go through about 20 minutes of warm up activities, mainly jumping rope. By the time I got to hit, I was totally worn out! Even then, I didn't feel that overmatched by the guy I got paired against and I was hoping I'd at least get to practice with them. He told me to try again after a couple more years of training and practice. I never got to come back, because they promptly committed some NCAA infractions and got their whole team shut down. (Ha, karma!) To this day, NSU still doesn't have a Men's Tennis squad.

If a 59 year old guy can play college football, surely I can compete in tennis. Maybe RSU has a team?

"Kip, you hang out in cyber space a lot. Have you ever run across a time machine? What do you want to bet I could hit a tennis ball over those mountains? Yeah, I could have taken State..."

So who wants to pay my house payment and utility bills and car payment and insurance while I follow my dream? Also, how do I hide this flop hanging over my belly so a coach doesn't spot it?
There's a lot to consider still.

Re:Never too old to play? - 2007/08/23 18:14 Chad I heard they make mens gurtals (sp?) They call those "muffin tops" You're never too old to do anything but remember there are 19 year olds that aren't as physically challenged as the rest of us. You want that dream you go get it.
As for your bills....your on your own with that one.

Re:Never too old to play? - 2007/08/24 05:17 hehe Thanks Chad. I needed a giggle today. And I say if you think you can, you go for it!! I think you have a great chance.

Re:Never too old to play? - 2007/08/24 19:26 No prob, haha. Well, maybe a couple years ago it would have been possible. But I am here to tell anyone younger than me, that once you turn 30 you physically fall apart! I didn't maintain any kind of fitness regimen aside from playing tennis and I'm paying for it. I've gotten back into a light strength training routine and I'm slowly pulling myself back together, but I really need to run. I used to bike a lot, too, but that's tough on gravel roads now.

Unfortunately, I doubt I will ever be able to make myself just take off jogging or running. So boring!

I swear, office work erodes your body like nothing else. I can't keep up with my dad on his ranch at all.
Maybe I need a personal trainer.

Vance, if I join up, will I get my own personal trainer?

Robyn, it's getting harder and harder to suck it in. I would not be above wearing a man-girdle. Sporting a noticable gut is where I'm drawing the line!

But...Michelle's Alfredo sauce is sooo good....

Re:Never too old to play? - 2007/08/24 20:50 Ok, lets see if I can remember all of this. I enlisted and went to basic training when I was 26. Most of the guys I was in training with were right out of high school. It has stayed that way for the most part. There are some older people that I work with, but I am older than most. I'm 31 right now, and I run at least 5 or 6 miles at least 4 or 5 days a week. I average about a 14:30 on a 2 mile run, sometimes faster if I try. I will agree that once you hit 30, you do start falling apart. My knees, ankles, and feet hurt on a daily basis. I don't always keep up with the younger guys, but I definately try. So Chad, if you need a personal trainer, I think I am still in good enough shape to work you over pretty good. All I know is a bunch of military physical training things, but I'm sure they would get you in shape. I do have to admit though, I do have a bit of a man belly, but it isn't from beer. I actually hate beer. It is from not eating the best. Oh well, I guess as long as I can pass my pt tests, I'll be ok.
