A Chouteau Centennial Initiative - 2007/11/17 18:55 A Centennial Initiative: After standing on the corner and watching downtown Chouteau burn many years ago and asking my grandfather who retired after about forty-years from Public Service
(Mayes County)and serving on the voluntary fire department in Chouteau, he said about an electric heater in the old apartment buildings. Many of the old photos of before exist..

Here is the initiative, Redevelop the downtown in a style similar to what it was with loft-style living. and adding a high- tech infrastructure. Work with the Amish/Menonite community, the Cherokee Nation, the farmers and the techies. These distinctive groups have been around some for considerably more than a hundred years even before Jean- Pierre came from France and named the place. Today, most want to create opportunities and share in a homeland they are all native to. They have in common talents as artists and craftsmanship that is incomparable and not usual to find in a common ground. With Google (tm) coming to the industrial park people will be looking for alternative housing (build it and they will come).
The Amish/Menonite, farm, technology and Cherokee communities in a Co-op style could promote tourism to travel agencies. Chouteau and Mayes County from Mazie going North could be a travel destination if properly promoted. Furthermore, you have great resources for quality food and dairy at a farmers market perhaps not unlike the quality and kind service that the Kroeker family offered on the corner there for many generations. Instead of gaming you might contact the Cherokee Nation for an Art Market, they have many- many talented world renowned artists that could contribute to a museum/ gallery space. In community development, It seems other than infrastructure you might also want to consider education. In a recent meeting with the President of the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) he was telling me about a branding campaign and their expansion into other markets in states and countries. If you could have a branch of a school of that magnitude you would not only do good for growth but be providing a great service for the next generation! If someone wants to contact him I can assist or do it on your own. Hopefully, you see the positive in this and it works for those of you if you who are interested. I will never ask for anything in return except an invitation to a nice old-time holiday parade in many years to come. Hopefully, you in Chouteau will be the first and the best in your neck of the woods to do something like this and leave the rest in your dust. You have every reason to succeed including close proximity to the airport as it goes.

Re:A Chouteau Centennial Initiative - 2007/11/19 20:02 I don't know how well apartments in downtown Chouteau would do with the train tracks right there. I lived in town for a few years and that coal train drove me insane. On weekdays I have timed them 6 minutes apart on occasion.
But ANYTHING is better than an empty lot with nothing but a Betsy Bingo grid on it.

This is a worthy idea you've put forth, and it's something I will give due consideration to as I form my exploratory committee.
The revitalization of Guy Williams park has been a step in the right direction, but I think we can do more. What we need is new leadership.

That is why I wish to disclose that I.... am considering accepting my party's nomination (Whigs) for Mayor of Chouteau, Oklahoma of the United States of America!

Re:A Chouteau Centennial Initiative - 2007/11/22 03:53 You're dadgummed right I'm serious! I've given this a lot of preliminary thought. There are certain obstacles to overcome, of course. For instance.... I do not live in Chouteau. But I do own a home there. I'm not sure that is enough, but it was good enough to get Hillary Clinton cleared to run for Governor of New York, right?
Also, I am unsure if we vote for Mayor or if the city council appoints them. I don't think it pays anything either(unless you're crooked) so we're going to have to double the salary at least.
I'm going to hit the after Thanksgiving sales with my lovely wife and adorable daughter to look for a schnazy top hat, vest, and pocket watch. Depending how Michelle thinks I look in that, and also to a lesser extent how much I feel The Call from my constituency, I can say without reservation that I will pour my full efforts into considering running for Mayor of Chouteau, Oklahoma of the United States of America!

One objective of my Mayorship will be to make sure every weatherman and sports announcer statewide knows that Chouteau is neither Poteau nor Choctaw!

I also want to re-erect that big green 'CHOUTEAU' sign that used to be streteched over the stoplight at Hwy69 and Main St. Don't anyone pretend you can't remember it, either!

I will also pressure Union Pacific or whomever operates the trains to only briefly blow their horns when passing through town. We have crossing arms at both railroad crossings. There's no reason to wake every baby in town everytime a load comes through. If such an accord cannot be reached, they will simply have to reroute their tracks around town. I would suggest the back end of Chouteau Hills, unless anyone has a problem with that?

Also, anyone that ever picked on me in school will be rounded up and spend at least one February night in ye old jail behind the phone company.

I'LL HELP WITH POSTERS. BUT WHEN YOU ARE MAYOR CAN YOU DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE SPEEDING THAT GOES ON DOWN 16TH STR IN CHOUTEAU HILLS. MY DAD SAYS ITS "MY FRIENDS" SOMEONE FORGOT TO TELL HIM I'M 30 NOW AND MY FRIENDS DON'T LIVE AROUND THEM ANYMORE. BIG DORK. LOL THE COPS WOULD BE BUSY AKK DAY UP THERE.

Re:A Chouteau Centennial Initiative - 2007/11/24 16:08 Yeah, speeding is a real pet peeve of mine. The root of the problem in Chouteau Hills is that it takes so long to get to the back area on the 25mph roads that people are too tempted to speed. We need to install some speed bumps and open up an East access road into Chouteau Hills to alleviate traffic. There used to be a dirt road through someone's pasture back there, the town needs to buy the right of way and pave a street through there over to old highway 33.

I like your slogans. This town needs a proven leader. Someone with the strength and charisma to motivate people to his side and get some needed improvements accomplished. Someone who isn't afraid to fight for what's right. Someone who won't back down from the power hungry Amish lobby.

If that man isn't available, I might just weasel in.
